Besides spending as much free time as possible in Akraberg, Joost plays the bassoon in a symphony orchestra and Johan works at the University of the Faroe Islands. Vitastova is the perfect refuge from our busy professional lives.

Our approach to Vitastova is grounded in respect—for the building, the surrounding landscape, ecosystems, and the local community. We believe that preservation, sustainability, and hospitality belong together.
Vitastova, created from a functional necessity to guide ships safely through treacherous waters, remains part of a living ecological and cultural environment.
Since we took over the house in 2021, we have invested our own time and funds in the restoration — new roof, cladding, windows, and doors — and replaced the oil heating with an air-to-water heat pump. No more oil at Vitastova. The work has been guided as closely as possible by original photographs of the building, some of which you can see on the History page. Some compromises are unavoidable, but our aim throughout has been to preserve the spirit of what this place was, not just its structure. Income from guests goes back into continuing that work.
We are also thinking about what else this place could hold. The outhouse section of the lodge — a beautiful space in its own right — is where we imagine hosting small concerts and exhibitions over time. Nothing that competes with the setting, only things that belong to it.
What matters to us is that Akraberg endures, and that it is shared. Not owned in the usual sense, but held — with respect for its history, and open to those who want to experience it. The responsibility for part of a national historic landmark should not be taken lightly and we are very mindful of that.
